BikeSafe Riding Assessments

What is BikeSafe?

Bikesafe is a riding assessment scheme which is a nationwide police-led motorcyclist casualty reduction initiative. While BikeSafe is not a training solution the assessment and classroom tuition is intended to make riders aware of safety issues when riding and to ‘bridge the gap’ into accredited further training on offer from third parties.

BikeSafe is part of the “Motorcycle Training Matters” initiative by the Bedfordshire and Luton Casualty Reduction Partnership to help reduce the number of motorcyclists killed and injured on our roads by improving riders’ skills and promoting ongoing rider training. We are doing this by working in partnership with the motorcycling community in Bedfordshire and Luton, including local motorcycle instructors, with support from the Department for Transport.

BikeSafe – Assessed Rides

Do you really know how well you ride? Or how you could improve? You can find out by doing an assessed ride with a police motorcyclist who will give you impartial, expert feedback on what you’re doing well and where you could develop your skills.

Who is BikeSafe for?

BikeSafe is recommended for any rider who holds a full motorcycle licence who lives, works or rides in Bedfordshire. It is particularly suitable for you if you have taken no further training since passing your test, have moved to a more powerful bike or are returning to riding after a break.

What’s Involved?

You will ride a set route that has been planned to include different roads and riding conditions, followed by a police motorcyclist who will observe your riding. They will then give you an assessment and feedback on your riding in thirteen different areas, telling you what you do well and where you can improve your skills.

  • Moving off
  • Stopping
  • Observation
  • Planning
  • Machine control
  • Accelerating
  • Braking
  • Gears
  • Signals
  • Positioning
  • Cornering
  • Overtake / filter
  • Attitude

You can use this information to help identify how you can improve your riding. If you choose to take further training the feedback will help your trainer focus on these areas. You will be given information about local training providers and training schemes available to you.

What does it cost?

It’s FREE.
